Effects of Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is characterized by an individual’s dependence on a particular substance or substances to continue functioning in an approximately normal manner. Because there are many different types of drugs that can lead to drug addiction through repeated use, the specific effects of drug addiction are also extremely varied.
The main effect of any form of drug addiction, however, is the dependence of the addict on the drug in order to feel satisfied and comfortable. This is because recreational drug use triggers the release of a compound within the brain that stimulates pleasure. This creates a mental dependence on the drug that grows as the need for greater stimulation gets larger and larger.
The second effect of prolonged addiction to a drug is the development of a physical dependence on the drug. The body of the drug addict becomes so used to the presence of the particular drug within its system that it becomes physically dependent upon the drug and is unable to operate properly if it is not present. This is the cause of withdrawal symptoms when someone suffering from drug addiction decides to cease ingesting their chosen drug.
One of the most painful effects of drug addiction is the development of withdrawal symptoms when the drug is withheld from the addict. Because the body has become dependent on the drug to operate, the addict experiences, among other symptoms, nausea, headaches, dizziness, and weakness for a long period of time after he stops ingesting the drug.
